Photographic Tripods: Stabilizing Shots

A tripod is a three-legged frame used to provide support to an object. In the world of photography, a tripod is used to rest, stabilize and sometimes elevate a flash unit, a camera and other equipments used for photography. A photography tripod has a mounting head along with its three legs. The mounting head is where the camera is attached or rested for support. The mounting head of a tripod has a thumbscrew, which is meant for a female threaded holder on a camera, and also has a system that allows you to tilt or rotate the camera when it is put on the tripod. Tripod legs are usually foldable, so as to save space when not in use. Tripods used in photography are made of carbon fiber, aluminum, plastic, wood or steel.

The use of tripods

Tripods are used for both styles of photography, motion and still. In both these style, the tripod is used to avoid any kind of camera movement. The tripod is most essential in photography when the lenses in use are of an extreme focal length or when slow speed exposures are in use, because when the shutter is open, any sort of camera movement will result in blurry images. As the tripod reduces any sort of ‘camera shake’, the photos clicked when the camera is kept on the tripod, are extremely sharp. Tripods also help the photographer frame the photos beautifully and precisely. The tripod also allows the photographers to approach the shots more thoughtfully. These are just a few reasons as to why tripods are extremely important to professional photography and also in the case of videos. Many also use tripods as a substitute to C-Stands in photographic accessories.

Types of tripods

There are various kinds of tripods that are used in photography. There are small table top tripods available that are also called tablepods. There are tripods that are also suited for rapid setup on any terrain and at any angle. Some kinds of tripods are used mainly for low-angle photography and some tripods have heads that enable photographers to pan and tilt with ease. Some tripods are for heavy, professional cameras and some for lightweight DSLRs. Tripods with flexible legs are also available.

Therefore, if you want to shoot perfectly framed, sharp photographs, the use of a tripod is essential. Also, tripods are considered the best friends of professional photographers.
